j 24 sailboat
Adjusting Sail Shape on a J/24?
I started sailing about 2 years ago and have access to a J/24 that I'd like to get sailing. Right now I sail 420's. But controlling sail shape is WAY more complicated so I'm looking for tips.
How do I adjust shape for low medium and high winds, and how do I recognize something needs to be changed (besides too much tiller pressure and massive heeling)

great question but hard to answer in a small space. the added sailboat adjustments include shroud tension, backstay adjustment, jib/genoa car placement, halyard tension. out haul adjustment, boom vang tension, traveler placement, crew weight and placement, etc.
the best place to start to find info is to check out the many j24 tuning guides that are available on line.

if the boat is equipped with a knot meter or gps, you can note what work/doesn't work as you adjust the sail controls on the boat. by noting the fast setting, you will be able to duplicate them in similar situations

Dear, I think it's possible, and your expectations are reasonable. I think you would enjoy it, and experience is a very valuable thing. I love boat projects and automotive projects, and over the decades I've been tackling them, I have saved tens of thousands of dollars, learned a ton, and had a lot of fun.
The only issue I would see is the short turnaround time. In three months, you might not be able to accomplish much in your spare time. But, be sure to factor the cost of rent that you will be saving, into the equation!
