j 24 sailboat
Fast, small, sailboats?
I am researching different types of hulls on sailboats... small sailboats. Maybe one day ill buy one since i live on the water but this is why i am researching it. I am looking for an open hull that is sleek and fast. I have read that sharpies are pretty quick. Just something that is comfortable and fast, but not like a sunfish. Thanks
I would go with a Sharpie, but the Laser or Optimist is one of the fastest Day Sailors known.
If you go multi hull, then speed increases by %180 or so. The Multiple Hulls reduce the drag and go ZOOM!
I use to race Lasers, I like and prefer them over many other similar vessels of that class.
Venture is also a great one, though older, they can still be found and brought up to good specs.
O'Days had a good run in the 80s and 90s, they are still fun.
My friend owns an old Galilee, another of my sailing buddies owns a ComPac, that is where the dynamics come in. There is comfortable and then there is fast. A J-24 is a very fast sailboat, but is no creature comforts.
Any boat made to race has few if any creature comforts. Some do, the Hurleys made a great 16'-18'er that could cross Oceans, fast.
Open hull that is sleek and fast, Optimist, Hunter, O'Day, Vangaurd, a few Herrschoffs and some very high end Melges, Flying Scotts and others.
I would go Sharpie and have a Boat Builder assemble it with an emphasis on Positive Flotation.
Always wear a PFD and take some lessons.
