August is a great month to tour the fjords. Bergen is probably the best city to base yourself in for these tours, though it's also possible to do them round trip from Oslo:

Many Norwegians take holiday in August, so services often run on a summer schedules, and some places (restaurants, clubs, etc) may be closed especially in smaller cities. Plenty of tourist attractions are still open, but most people come in summer for the nature.

I am with you 100%… I went out to do some photography for the “youth lake day” and, although it was fun to ride around on 2 ski boats and a sea-doo all day, when I got home, I was totally warn out and burn in various places I had obviously missed by the spf 75 I put on.
“Why has water born enjoyment have to come in the form of floating condominiums, bass boats, Aluminum pontoon boats or Donzi ski boats and jet skis ?”
On the one hand, the advertisers are responsible. It's easy to sell loud go-fast excitement, or gross luxury, not only because they are superficially appealing, but because an image can be sold along with the product. A person buys an 'exciting' boat not only to have it, but to be exciting himself, because the marketing deliberately creates that association.
From the consumer's side, besides falling prey to marketing strategies, car culture reigns supreme. It's unfortunate, but not really surprising, that the most popular boats would be loud, fast, and drivable like cars, instead of slow, quiet, and requiring some specialized skills to use.

Get a center console Boston Whaler. Great overall boat for fresh/saltwater and very seaworthy!
